Metal Work

Several years ago I took a "hobby" welding course at SAIT here in Calgary.  Welding is something I've always been curious about so this was an opportunity for me to address that interest plus it was an opportunity for me to spend some quality time with our son, Neal, who also took the course.  Our  initial project was a metal T-rex designed after the  popular wooden children's mobiles.

After the success of the dinosaur, I went on to try a few more projects at SAIT.  Here are some of the results ......

This is a Chinese inspired screen, about 3x6'

This is a 4x5' trellis with freeform curves.

This is the most challenging piece I tried, a commission for a co-worker.
It's a grating to go in a wine cellar, it fits over a sand filled pit intended
to provide stable humidity to the cellar.

I haven't done any significant metalwork in the last couple of years, for 2 reasons, the first is that I have never bought the necessary welding and cutting tools and the second is that woodworking and metalworking in the same space don't mix very well, so I've stayed with the woodturning.  We'll see what the future brings ......
